What is the intention of setting up this programme?
The goal is to transfer space technology into non-space sectors. Therefore, every applicant must have a connection to the aerospace industry.

Who is involved in ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen?
The Application Center for Satellite Navigation Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) is the company in charge of the programme. It is joined by four external partners: The European Space Agency (ESA), the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Kreissparkasse München Starnberg (a local bank). Details on each of these participating institutions can be found at www.esa-bic.de.

How many start-up companies can you support?
The aim is to support 40 companies by 2013 - 10 companies every year.

How long is the incubation period?
The incubation period can last up to two years.

What support can I expect from the ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen programme?
Financial and technical support, as well as numerous benefits from our extensive international network.

What does the financial support consist of?
The financial support is divided into two parts. One part is an incentive scheme, which you do not have to pay back. This consists of €25,000 from ESA and €35,000 from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The other part is an optional €40,000 loan from the Kreissparkasse München Starnberg (a local bank).

What does the technical support consist of?
The technical support currently involves 40 hours from the German Aerospace Center (DLR); this can include manpower, software and hardware, and test facilities.

How long does it take to become an incubatee at ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen?
If approved by TEB2, you should plan about two months from the deadline to the start of your incubation.

What criteria do the applicants have to fulfil?
The main criterion is a connection to the aerospace industry, e.g. usage of satellites, hardware, software, or other special materials developed for the space industry. All other criteria, including specific requirements from ESA and AZO, can be found on the application template.

Is there an application template for ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen?
Yes; you can find the template at www.esa-bic.de.

Are there any deadlines on applying?
Yes, although it is an open call. At the moment there are four deadlines per year at intervals of about three months. As soon as we know the next deadline, it is always published immediately at www.esa-bic.de.

How can I have my idea evaluated?

  1. First fill out the application proposal template, which is available for download at www.esa-bic.de.
  2. Submit your proposal before the next deadline.
  3. We then check if your idea meets the formal requirements.
  4. Next, you present your company at the first evaluation meeting at the Application Center for Satellite Navigation Oberpfaffenhofen (TEB1).
  5. You then present your company at the second evaluation meeting at one of the four ESA BIC locations (TEB2).
  6. Your proposal will then be accepted or rejected.
Where do I need to register my company?
Your company must be registered in Bavaria, Germany. This is a formal requirement to become an incubatee.

Where will my headquarters be?
The headquarters of each start-up company entering ESA BIC Oberpfaffenhofen will be at the Application Center for Satellite Navigation Oberpfaffenhofen, Friedrichshafener Str. 1, 82205 Gilching, Germany.
